Fire Evacuation drills

A fire evacuation drill is done to simulate an emergency situation and is used to evaluate the effectiveness of the evacuation procedure, ensure everyone involved closely follows procedures and to identify any weak points or improvements.

During a fire evacuation drill it is highly recommended that all staff participate. This will help to ensure everyone remains familiar with the evacuation process and any new employees can experience and learn the procedures in place.

It is a legal requirement that a fire drill should be carried out at least once per year and the results must be recorded as part of fire safety records.

Fire Risk Assessment

If you are the person responsible for the premises, as stipulated by The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, a fire risk assessment is a legal requirement that must be regularly carried out and reviewed. You must keep a written record of the fire risk assessment if your company/business has 5 or more people.

When carrying out the assessment you should:

• Identify potential fire hazards
• Identify people who may be at risk
• Evaluate risks and minimise/remove them wherever possible
• Record findings of the assessment
• Review and update regularly
